What IS Coaching?

What IS Transformational Coaching?

Many people don't really know or understand what coaching is...and what it is not. People often confuse coaches, mentors, and sponsors. Each serves a different purpose, with occasional, limited overlapping.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership." I describe coaching as "listening and reflecting, not advising or telling."

Authentic coaching believes the coachee is the expert in their own life and needs guidance exploring and activating the answers. Coaching can be transactional, transformational, or a bit of both. Since most "problems" are symptoms of something and not the actual issue, we use a combination of transformational and transactional coaching to identify the issue and resolve it.

Transactional coaching helps people deal with challenges or struggles they are facing at the moment. Transformational coaching deals with the deeper, underlying issues that are causing the challenges or struggles. If those deeper challenges are not addressed, it will be difficult to sustain lasting change.

That said, coaching IS NOT therapy or counseling. Therapy and counseling help people heal to the point they can function. Coaching helps them move from functional to their vision of optimal. In some instances, clients can participate in both, as long as everyone understands and agrees to their roles.

Interview Your Coach and Be An Informed Buyer!

As with any provider, find the coach that is right for you. This could take some time, but it will be worth it. Coaching is an investment and you should know what you are getting. Good coaches evaluate clients before accepting them, and clients should interview and find the right coach for them.

All coaches are not equal. Ask the coach how long they have been coaching, where they were trained, hours of training and coaching delivery, their certifications, insurance, confidentiality policy (fiduciary responsibility should be to the coachee), satisfaction guarantee, etc.

While some non-certified coaches can be very good at what they do, our coaching team members have completed HUNDREDS of hours of training and delivered thousands of hours of coaching as internal employees and to external, private clients.
